You are correct. I have found that some puggles are alot bigger than the breeder or vet said they would be. Thanks for sharing.

Size depends not only on the parents but the dogs in the pedigree behind them. I was not familiar with Beagle breeding until I started raising Puggles 18 months ago.
On several occasions I have been quite surprised at the size some of the puppies have turned out.
My Pug stud is an average sized male at about 16-17 pounds. My Beagle girls range in size from 13'' weighing 12 pounds, to some 15'' girls weighing 26-28 pounds.
So I figure depending on the mother that the puppies will be in between the size of that mother and the father. Well...... not always.
I have a 13'' beagle that weighs about 18 pounds, same as the dad. So I estimated her puppies to weigh between 15-20 pounds.
Not the case. At 6 months she has 2 of her 6 puppies that already weigh 22 pounds--not fat. After speaking with other people experienced in raising Beagles, it became apparent that even if a Beagle is small and 13'', it could have had 1 or more parent that was a large 15'' Beagle, and who knows how many large 15'' Beagles are back in the Pedigree. So you can't 'always' look at a puggles parents and guess how big they will end up.
At best that is just what it is, a guess.
Even these folks always trying to sell more puppies by advertising 'pocket puggles'-- they are guessing too. Ask if any will GUARANTEE their puppies will not get larger than 10 pounds. I am sure most or ALL will not put that in writing.

Pocket Puggles are more of a sales gimmick than anything else. All puggle sizes depend on their parents size. Most breeders who advertise pocket puggles cant guarantee their size and most wont even be full puggles. A pug and a beagle most times can not physically have an offspring of a full grown 10 pound pup. No responsible breeder will breed such a small beagle, for the threat of a hard labor. Most unreputble breeders will breed a puggle with a chihuahua to get the small size call the dog a second generation puggle. Even small beagles are on average 18 to 30 pounds and very small pugs average at least 15 pounds so having a pocket puggle is almost physically impossible.
Please do not be lead to believe pocket puggles are healthy or even full breed puggle by unreputable breeders. Puggles are meant to be a medium sized dog --18 to 30 pounds. Unreputable breeders know that once they sell you the dog and it reaches full grown size at 18 pounds you wont return it because it outgrew it's pocket puggle size. Gimmicks by BYB to sell more pups.
If anyone own a puggle who weighs 10 pounds I'd love to see pictures and talk to the breeder you got it from.

I just picked Plato up on Saturday @ 6 wks, so I can't say definitely what size he will reach as he grows. But, talking with the breeder when we picked him up, she explained that this was the smallest litter of puggles she had ever bred. At 6 wks., Plato weighs 3.6 lbs. and was bred with a 20 lb. pug and 18 lb. beagle (he was also the smallest of the litter). She didn't advertise her puggles as 'pocket puggles', and also didn't expect them to be this small. She said, based on what she & the vet had discussed that Plato will definitely grow to be no heavier than 15 lbs, also adding that 10-12 lbs. would probably be more accurate. It doesn't really matter to me what the average size for a puggle is 'supposed' to be; he's perfect for us ( & in perfect health thus far), even if he is a little small for the breed. I understand the warning of bogus breeders & false advertising, but it's obviously not physically impossible to produce a healthy, handsome, honestly bred puggle that's just a bit on the small side.

The breeder and my vet both told me Dagger would be no bigger than 15lbs. He's twice that. You will only know for sure when Plato is between 9mos and 1 year old.

I'm curious to know the comparison between what they weighed as puppies compared to what they weighed full grown. I thought I read somewhere that you can triple their weight at 9 weeks or double it at 12 weeks to get their adult weight. So I was just wondering if it rang true with any of you and also about how big Ava will get. She weighed 4 lb at 9 weeks and she is not 12 weeks quite yet but she weighed 5.6 lb at the vet at 11 weeks.

My pups average about 8-10 ounces at birth and fit in the palm of my hand (butt at my wrist). They will gain steadily but after they start eating puppy food AND nursing from mom, they will begin to have a huge weight gain around 4 weeks of age. They can gain a pound within a few days. They will be about 5-8 pounds by the time they leave me between 6-8 weeks. Puppy size can depend on the number of pups in a litter, the care the mom and pups receive as well as genetics.
The smallest pup I've had was 2.5 pounds at 6 1/2 weeks out of a litter of 9 pups. She was just tiny but she didn't know it. She was looking out at bigger pups so thought she was the same size. At 6 months old, she was 12 pounds but I'd NEVER say she was a teacup, pocket, mini or other choice word because genetically she is NOT. Her littermates who were 6-7 pounds at 6 1/2 weeks were double her size at 6 months and still growing. As with all breeds of dogs, you're going to have a size and weight variance within a litter. On average my pups are between 25-30 pounds at maturity but some have been heavier. Usually a puggle is at their mature height and weight at 6 months of age but they can grow a little more yet. My beagle moms are 10 1/2 - 13" at the shoulder weighing 15-25 pounds and my pug is 10" at the shoulder weighing 20 pounds. Health and nutrition are also key factors to mature height and weight - in both parents and pups. A smaller adult may have genes to produce taller pups.
The important thing to remember is that puggles aren't a breed of their own and many breeders aren't breeding purebred parents. Although smaller beagles and pugs do exist they aren't the norm. If you're breeding chihuahuas to pugs you're going to get a different size pup and it's not a puggle. Same as breeding a mixed breed beagle with a pug. Beagles usually range from 10-15" tall at the shoulder and pugs can range 8-11" at the shoulder so you can see how your pups/dogs can vary.
I just tell people to be careful of labels like teacup, pocket and miniature - words that IMPLY a small size - because the breeder is telling you what you want to hear. Be knowledgeable of the breed standards and if a breeder is telling you their pups will be small, get it in writing and make sure they offer a money back guarantee. That's when you'll find out who will stand behind their promise.

I was told by the breeder that Armani would be about 17-20lbs and Versace 15lbs. full grown. At 12 weeks Armani was 9lbs and Versace 11lbs the vet estimated that Armani would be 20-25lbs full grown and Versace 30+lbs full grown. If I wanted a small dog I wouldn've gotten a small breed, I will love them just the same no matter how big they get. Any dog is small compared to Bella (our Mastiff) who we call the horse....she stands with her paws on my shoulders and towers over me, (i'm 5'7") she is just a big teddy bear so sweet and loving.
Now Layla's breeder said Layla would reach about 25lbs give or take a few lbs. She weighed 4lbs at 9 weeks when she arrived.
Only time will tell.......they all go back to the vet next week, I am anxious to see how much they weigh now. Versace feels about 15-20lbs he's a big boy.

Benson is about 26 lbs at 10 months. He's absolutely the perfect size for me! ...maybe that is because he is the perfect dog for me! Gotta love puggles! Last night i was able to talk to the breeders of my puggle for the first time...as i adopted Benson from a family who adopted him from the breeders. Well, she was shocked at benson's size! 26lbs approximately. Well his Mom the beagle was 20lbs and his Dad the pug was only 12lbs! so the size of the parents are no indication of what size the puppy will become.

I am now curious as to when Ava will stop growing. She is 7 months old and weighs about 16 lb and has for a couple weeks. The reason I'm wondering is because I want to get her an easy walk front clip harness. Like this one cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=150265290705 and if I get her one I don't want her to grow out of it. Thanks in advance for your input!
