A Letter from your Puppy
Dear Mom and Dad,
I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a plastic bag in a landfill now.
Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small. But the lady took it off before she sent me to Rainbow Bridge.
Would I still be at home if I hadn't chewed your shoe? I didn't know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys.
Would I still be at home if I had been house broken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door.
Would I still be at home if I hadn't barked? I was only saying, "I'm scared, I'm lonely, I'm here, I'm here! I want to be your best friend."
Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn't pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today.
Love,
Your Puppy

It is hard to drop a puppy off at a shelter. I am actually one that got a Beagle from a shelter. He was a breeder dog and had severe separation anxiety. I thought I could handle it and I did everything right. He tore holes in my carpet and even wrecked my entire apartment one time. I kept him and tried working with him. He was a wonderful dog except for the anxiety. What ended it was that I left for a super bowl party and put him in his kennel to go to bed. I came home 2 hrs later, the kennel was chewed up, he trashed my apartment again and chewed a hole in the wall near my door. It seemed to be getting worse. I couldn't afford it any more. I spent $1000 on him in 5 weeks. I dropped him off at the shelter and luckily everyone loves a beagle and he had a new home before they could post him online. I received a phone call a month later because the new owner did not update his micro chip. He had gotten loose. I wonder every day about what ever happened to him and I should have posted an ad in the newspaper but I couldn't give him what he needed. That was someone home all the time or someone that knew how to handle severe cases.
