We have found someone about 3 hours away that has some pups available. He has sent us pictures of the litter and requires a deposit to put us on the list. The first time we can see the pups is on take home day. On that day pups will be picked in the order checks were received. Is this standard practice? (We are trying to stay away from shipping a dog.)
I am concerned because I do not want to take an alpha dog or discover that the place is a mill...

This is exactly how the breeder I'm buying from does it. I also live 3 hrs away. The breeder stated in the ad that the pups are raised with the family in the home and I did get pictures of the birthing box with mom and new pups. In the pictures sent to us I can also see parts of the home and family that are raising the pups. The breeder was more than willing to answer questions or send pictures which made me feel more comfortable. I pick my little girl up next weekend and hope all is good. Good luck!

Amrich4 Can I ask you... Let's say that you get there and the conditions are not what you expected, do you lose your deposit?

yes, the refund is only refundable if they can't provide the puppy I was requesting. Like I'm requesting a fawn female, if the mom only had males or none where fawn, then I would get my deposit back. Ask lots of questions of the breeder. If at all you feel uncomfortable, I say, don't do it. They way the breeder answers questions is what made me feel comfortable in my choice. I also get first choice of the females in the litter so I can pick whichever female suits my family. Good luck and follow your gut.

The FIRST time you'll see the pups is on pick up day??? I think that's a bit strange. If the pups are raised in the home from birth the breeder should certainly be able to provide you with photos. If you CAN'T see them at all until pick up day then that sounds like a broker to me. A broker is someone that buys pups or whole litters and resells them. I say resell because they don't raise the pups from birth and don't have the parents. If the breeder is only allowing you to choose pups in order of deposit the day of pick up, what's to say that you don't get there before the person before you? Are you going to have to wait on them to get there? I know we all do things differently but a breeder should be willing to work for you too so ask as many questions as needed for you to feel comfortable. If something doesn't seem right, DON'T do it. Your inner voice is seldom wrong.
